چکیده

The segregation of albino or chlorophyll deficient seedlings in a pedigree propagated by self-fertilization is due either to a definite genetic factor or factors according to DEMEREC (1923) in maize, HALLQVIST (1926) in barley, etc., or to the abnormality of the plastids themselves according to CORRENS (1909) in Mirabilis, BAUR (1909) in Pelargonium, ANDERSON (1923) in maize, CLAUSEN (1927) in Viola, etc. In the former cases, the albino segregates occur in one-fourth, seven-sixteenths, onesixteenth and so on, according to the number and behavior of the factors by which the deficiency of chlorophyll is manifested, while in the latter their segregating proportion is quite irregular, varying according to the degree of variegation on the parental plants from which the seeds were collected, or, in other words, the abnormal plastids conduct themselves independently of the genetic factors, their transmission therefore being non-Mendelian. Professor S6 (1921) studying the genetics of variegated barley made its peculiar behavior clear. His conclusions published in the Japanese language induced me to write this paper, in which I will give a critical discussion of the complicated heredity of some variegated plants in the light of Professor S6’s work and of analogous cases from observations made by myself.

The effect of modifiers of position-effect variegation on the variegation of heterochromatic genes of Drosophila melanogaster.

Dominant modifiers of position-effect variegation of Drosophila melanogaster were tested for their effects on the variegation of genes normally located in heterochromatin. These modifiers were previously isolated as strong suppressors of the variegation of euchromatic genes and have been postulated to encode structural components of heterochromatin or other products that influence chromosome co...

Dosage-dependent modifiers of position effect variegation in Drosophila and a mass action model that explains their effect.

Twelve dominant enhancers of position effect variegation, representing four loci on the second and third chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster, have been induced by P-element mutagenesis. Instead of simple transposon insertions, seven of these mutations are cytologically visible duplications and three are deficiencies. The duplications define two distinct regions, each coinciding with a locus ...

Biochemical and Comparative Transcriptomic Analyses Identify Candidate Genes Related to Variegation Formation in Paeonia rockii.

Paeonia rockii is a wild tree peony species with large and dark purple variegations at the base of its petals. It is the genetic resource for various variegation patterns in tree peony cultivars, which is in contrast to the pure white petals of Paeonia ostii. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the formation of variegation in this plant is still unknown. Here, we conducted Illumina tran...

Natural foliar variegation without costs? The case of Begonia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Foliar variegation is recognized as arising from two major mechanisms: leaf structure and pigment-related variegation. Begonia has species with a variety of natural foliar variegation patterns, providing diverse examples of this phenomenon. The aims of this work are to elucidate the mechanisms underlying different foliar variegation patterns in Begonia and to determine their...

Leaf variegation is associated with reduced herbivore damage in Hydrophyllum virginianum

Leaf variegation refers to local regions of the upper surface of a leaf having reduced or obstructed chlorophyll, which results in whitish spots. These lighter spots may compromise the photosynthetic efficiency of a leaf, and many competing hypotheses have been put forward to explain why this patterning may be adaptive. It has been suggested that variegation is either an adaptive response to en...
